Professional Denture Adjustments for
Lewiston, ME

Dentures are great dental products that help people who are missing teeth or have dental health concerns that have led to tooth loss. They help you smile with confidence and are fully functional just like natural teeth. They are subjected to a lot of wear and tear from their constant usage which can lead to issues. When this happens, you may need a denture adjustment. Do not attempt to do it on your own because you can damage it beyond repair. A denture adjustment is removing small areas of the acrylic to aid in comfort but not necessarily fit. Your mouth will continue to change over time and eventually you will need to consider a reline or a new denture, but that’s a subject for a different article.

Signs You May Need a Denture Adjustment

● Discomfort: You will always experience discomfort when you first get dentures. This discomfort should subside within a week or so. If your dentures become uncomfortable again after the initial discomfort, you may need to get your dentures adjusted.

● Difficulty Eating: It is normal for people with dentures to have difficulty eating when they first get them. However, most people get used to eating with them rather quickly. If you continue to have difficulty later or it gets worse, you will need to get a denture adjustment.

What to Expect During a Denture Adjustment

A denture adjustment is a straightforward process that ensures your dentures fit comfortably and function effectively. During the appointment, your denturist will carefully examine your oral tissues and the fit of your dentures. They will ask you about any specific areas causing discomfort, such as sore spots or difficulty chewing. Based on their findings, the denturist will make precise adjustments to your dentures, typically by reshaping or trimming areas of the material to reduce pressure points. Adjustments are typically performed during your appointment and you do not need to leave the denture or partial with us for any length of time. The entire adjustment procedure is typically painless, and your denturist will work with you to ensure that everything is comfortable and stable enough for daily use.

If you experience any looseness in your dentures, your denturist may also recommend a denture reline. This involves adding a new layer of material to the base of the denture to improve its fit against your gums. The process of adding acrylic is not an adjustment and will require a future appointment where an impression is needed and the denture will need to be kept for a longer period, in our office typically a single day.
